Unfortunately, Rent is not a happy story. The rock musical presents an insight in the lives of a group of young and poor artists that struggle to survive in New York under the threat of HIV/AIDS. The music and lyrics of Rent were written by Jonathan Larson, who had as an inspiration La Boheme, the opera of Giacomo Puccini. Unfortunately, Larson never knew that the show won a Pulitzer Prize and had a major success, as he died before the off-Broadway premiere.
Jonathan Larson died due to aortic dissection. After his death, it was discovered that the artist had the Marfan syndrome, but he was never in his life diagnosed with it. After his death, his friends, together with his family, created the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation to supportive the creative work of young artists.
Rent is a superb musical and it deserves to be seen at least once on a lifetime. The songs are magnificent and the story is baffling. It’s a pity that Larson never had the chance to know how appreciated his work was and still is.]]>

The musical is a gritty love story about friends and couples in the early 90s East Village, written by Jonathan Larson and inspired by Puccini’s La Boheme. Rent closed in 2008, after a run of 12 years on Broadway. In relatively quick fashion, the producers of the original have decided to bring back the show and mount what they hope will be a more intimate version, with the same Tony Award nominated director, Michael Griefd, in the less costly confines of Off Broadway. While many in the new cast have credits in national tours and ensembles of Broadway shows, none of them have the career profile of, say, Ms. Menzel, who went on to win a Tony Award as Elphaba in Wicked and become an inspiration for many younger theatre actresses.
Among the new Rent Musical leads are Annaleigh Ashford in the role of Maureen Johnson, and Adam Chanler Berat as Mark Cohen, previously played by Anthony Rapp. Matt Shingledecker will play the moody guitarist Roger Davis, previously played by Adam Pascal. Arianda Fernandez will reprise the role of the drug addicted stripper Mimi Marquez. Corbin Reid, who has had small parts in Sister Act and American Idiot on Broadway, will play Joanne Jefferson. The cast is almost ready and the show will be good to go. Rentheads all over the world are looking for the opening night of this new production.]]>

Although the plot of Rent musical takes place in the 1996 Big Apple, a lot has changed. Most notably, the care for AIDS patients and the diminishing of prejudice over sexual orientation. The Rent Musical film describes the lives of several Bohemians and their struggles with sexuality, cross-dressing, drug abuse, paying the rent and life under the shadow of AIDS. Rent musical is heart wrenching, if you follow the drama in every character’s life, but at the same time, it is a story that brings about hope in a judgmental world. The action of Rent musical movie spans on a period of one year, from 1989 to 1990. The film also features six of the original Broadway cast members reprising their roles: Adam Pascal, Idina Menzel, Anthony Rapp, Taye Diggs, Wilson Jermaine Heredia and Jesse Martin.
There are of course differences between the movie and the stage version. As in the original Rent musical, the story of the film spans the course of one year. Rent musical only stated that the action begins and on a December 24 and was meant to the present. However, the film established the setting as 1989-1990. This has created some lyrical inconsistencies. For example, Angel’s song Today 4U contains a reference to the film Thelma and Louise, which was not released until 1991, and Maureen’s song Over the Moon makes references to the Oklahoma City bombing. Many of the Rent musical Broadway songs were cut in order to make room for the dialogue and to make the plot flow more naturally. Rent Musical is an awe-inspiring story about friendship and love going beyond death. It shows that even though some persons leave our lives, that does not mean they are gone forever, but on the contrary, that they are forever within our hearts.]]>
